Pronto's Canvas Gradebook Integration — Overview

With Pronto's Canvas Gradebook Integration, Teachers can easily assign points for activity in specific Pronto groups

Written by Ben Cannon

Pronto connects to Canvas as an external assignment tool, giving each assignment its own dedicated Pronto chat where students collaborate and instructors review that activity for grading.

When an instructor adds a Pronto Assignment to a Canvas course and completes setup, Pronto automatically creates a group chat for that assignment inside the course's Pronto Category and adds everyone who can see the assignment in Canvas.

Student activity in that chat — sending messages, replying, reacting, and responding to polls, are all pulled together into a convenient view within SpeedGrader. When it's time to grade, the instructor opens Canvas SpeedGrader, which displays each student's Pronto activity right next to the Canvas rubric and points.

Before you start

The Pronto to Canvas gradebook integration is a premium feature and must be enabled by your institution's Canvas admin.

A FERPA acknowledgment is required. Because all students in an assignment share one chat, the instructor confirms a FERPA acknowledgment during setup stating that these students are authorized to see and interact with one another. The "Create Assignment" option will not engage until the FERPA acknowledgement has been selected and the Pronto chat itself, isn't created until that's done.

It's web-based. The activity review experience runs in the Pronto web app; there's no mobile version for grading at this time, though grading will take all messages, responses, reactions and other activity regardless of whether it is performed via web or mobile.
