For Instructors: Reviewing & Grading Student Activity in SpeedGrader

Within SpeedGrader, Pronto now introduces an Activity View

Written by Ben Cannon

Grading happens in Canvas SpeedGrader, using the SpeedGrader button in Canvas — not the assignment link itself. For a quick overview of SpeedGrader, please see the video below by Instructure.

How SpeedGrader works with Pronto

When you open SpeedGrader for a student, the left side panel shows that student's Pronto activity for the specific group tied to the assignment, and the right side shows your Canvas rubric and points. It is important to note that your student's activities in other Pronto groups will not appear in SpeedGrader. You review the activity on the left and enter the grade on the right; Canvas saves the grade as it normally does. Students will appear to have "submitted" the assignment in Canvas as soon as they post their first message to the assignment Pronto group.

What activity is tracked

The activity view lists what the student did in the assignment chat, newest to oldest, with totals for each type:

  • Messages they posted

  • Replies to other messages

  • Emoji reactions they added

  • Poll responses they submitted

  • Chat Events they have initiated, including meetings started, threads created etc

Who can see the activity view

Members of the group who have grading access in Canvas will be able to render the activity view in SpeedGrader.
