Integrating Pronto into Brightspace (D2L)

This guide walks you through connecting a Brightspace school to Pronto using the LTI 1.3 integration.

Written by Ben Cannon

Introduction

Prior to getting started in your Brightspace environment, you must have a Pronto organization, with Integrations enabled. If you do not yet have an environment, or you are lacking the Integrations segment of Manage Organization, please reach out to help@pronto.io.

To access the Integrations panel, Click on the settings icon next to your name, and select Manage Organization. You should have a tile for Integrations. Once opened, click on the "Available" tab to see the list of available integrations.

Choose the LTI 1.3 Integration, and select "Connect"

Choose "Brightspace" as the platform and click the "Create Connection" button.

Keep this tab open — you will need it again soon.
Open your Brightspace admin portal in a separate tab and follow the steps below:

Step 1 - Dynamic Registration and Tool Configuration

  • Log in to Brightspace as the LMS admin

  • Click the Admin Tools gear and select Manage Extensibility

  • Click LTI Advantage

  • Click Register Tool

  • Select Dynamic

  • In the Tool initiation registration endpoint field, enter the “Dynamic Registration URL” shown on your Pronto tab:

  • Check Configure Deployment

  • Click Register

  • You may need to allow pop-ups in your browser:

  • The dynamic registration is now complete. You can take note of the client_id, although you won’t need it for any further steps in Brightspace. Make sure to click “Continue” instead of closing the tab to ensure the configuration completes properly in Brightspace.

  • Click Pronto LTI 1.3

  • Click the toggle to enable the tool, then click Save

  • Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click View Deployments

  • Click the Pronto LTI 1.3 deployment

  • Scroll down the page and enable the checkbox for Classlist including users not known to this deployment

  • Scroll down further and click Add Org Units

  • Select the org units you want to enable this tool for, or select all (not recommended in production environments), then click Add

  • Click Save and Close

Step 2 - Create Custom Links

  • Click the Admin Tools gear icon, and click Navigation & Themes

  • Click Custom Links

  • Click Create Link

  • Enter Pronto in the Name field, then click Insert Quicklink

  • In the popup dialog, click External Learning Tools

  • Click Pronto LTI 1.3

  • Verify that a URL was automatically entered into the URL field, then click Save

  • The Pronto custom link should now appear in the list of custom links.

  • Select a course to add the Pronto LTI tool to.

  • Hover near the right edge of the menu until the three-dot menu appears, then click Edit the Shared Navbar

  • Click Add Links

  • Click Custom Links, check the box for Pronto, then click Add

  • Reorder the Pronto menu item as desired, then click Save and Close

Step 3 - Launch the Tool and Connect the Integration

  • Click Pronto to launch the tool

  • Enter the integration key displayed on your “Pronto” tab.

  • Use the “Platform Integration Key”

  • The integration will connect to your organization and begin syncing the course and enrolled users. Wait a minute, then click the Retry button.

  • If you are still logged in as an admin user, or any user who isn’t enrolled in the course, you will continue to see the “Preparing Chat” message. Log in as a teacher or student who is enrolled in the course, then visit the course and click the Pronto button to launch Pronto.

  • Once a user who is enrolled in the course clicks the Pronto link, the Pronto web app will open in a new browser tab and automatically log the user in.

On your Pronto tab, go back to the initial “Integrations” page and click your new integration:

Depending on the size of your course and how quickly you open this page, the sync status of your course resources may vary.

To manually force a re-sync of a specific course or resource, click the resource, then click the “Sync Now” button in the top right.
